~TCInstallation
This on-line help provides information to assist you with your POWERLan
installation. Additional information is provided in the POWERLan
Install Guide. If you need to make low density installation diskettes,
refer to the topic "Making Low Density Installation Diskettes" (press F9
to access the search function).
~T Install from ~FROM
This field indicates the subdirectory from which the POWERLan software
will be installed. POWERLan automatically locates this subdirectory on
the installation diskette and completes the field for you. If you are
installing across the network, you may need to complete this field
accordingly.
~T Install to: ~TO
This is the subdirectory into which you plan to install the POWERLan
software. POWERLan assumes a default value of C:\PL (for a hard disk
installation).
~T This machine will be a ~MACHINETYPE
Enter the machine type in this field. You may configure your computer
as a workstation, non-dedicated server, or dedicated server. (Pressing
the <space bar> displays the possible choices.)
* WORKSTATIONS are machines that will only USE network resources but
cannot share disk resources. They can, however, share printers.
The workstation may contain a diskette or hard drive, or it may be
used as a diskless workstation and receive boot information
from a server designated as a boot server.
* NON-DEDICATED SERVERS are machines that can SHARE one or more
resources on the network (such as disk drives, CD-ROM drives and
printers). They can also provide network-wide services, such as
acting as a logon, spool, or boot server and can run applications
programs. This is the default setting.
* DEDICATED SERVERS are machines that function as high-performance
file servers but can serve as logon, spool, or boot servers as
well. They cannot, however, run applications programs. Machines
that will be dedicated servers must be equipped with expanded
memory.
If you install this machine as a workstation, only a minimum set of
files will be copied so that a minimum amount of local disk space
is used. If you later want to use this machine as a server, you will
have to re-install the software.
If you install as either a dedicated or non-dedicated server, all files
will be copied. If you install the machine as a non-dedicated server,
you will be able to toggle between non-dedicated and workstation
configurations without additional installation.
~T Network adapter type is ~BOARDTYPE
This field identifies the type of NetBIOS to drive the network interface
card installed in the machine. Press the <space bar> to display a list
of board types. The list reflects the current NetBIOS selections
available from Performance Technology, as well as an "other" selection.
The selections available include the following:
* ARCNET - for Performance Technology's POWERrim-series and other
ARCNET cards (this is the default).
* Ethernet - over 40 Ethernet cards from various vendors are supported.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Lists of currently supported ARCNET and Ethernet
cards, along with their appropriate NetBIOS programs,
are included in the POWERLan package. These lists
can also be obtained from Performance Technology's
Bulletin Board (1-210-524-0598).
These lists change as additional cards are tested
and approved by Performance Technology. We
recommend that you only use cards on the supported
lists or that you call the Performance Technology
sales department for an updated list before
selecting network interface cards.
* ODI -- see Note following
* NDIS -- see Note following
* CLARKSON PACKET -- see Note following
* Other - for any NetBIOS not supplied by Performance Technology.
Selecting Other enables a Command Line field in the NetBIOS
Parameters dialog box into which you enter the command line that
PLADMIN will generate where NetBIOS would be started. If you want
to do this as part of the initial installation, you may do so by
responding No to the "Do you want to use the default network adapter
settings?" prompt to access the NetBIOS Parameters dialog box.
Consult the vendor's documentation for specifics on this NetBIOS
and its command line parameters.
* None - none of the PT-supplied NetBIOSes are to be used, nor is a
command line to be generated by PLADMIN to initialize one. This
selection is used in cases where the network interface card has its
own NetBIOS or when you must manually install NetBIOS drivers in
CONFIG.SYS (as with IBM Token Ring).
NOTE: If you are using ODIS, NDIS, or Clarkson Packet drivers, refer
to either the POWERLan Administrator's Reference or the PLADMIN
on-line help system for additional details. These three drivers
require additional configuration outside the normal POWERLan
installation.
After you select a Board Type, corresponding default values are
supplied for the Interface Card parameters.
~T Install Button ~BEGIN
This selection begins the installation and copies the POWERLan files
from the source drive to the destination drive. You may also press
ALT-I to begin the installation. The files are listed on the screen
as they are copied, and a moving bar charts the installation process.
~T2Do you want a minimal installation? ~MINIMAL
Before copying files, POWERLan detects whether there is enough disk
space on the destination media for all files. If not, a minimal subset
that will make the network operational is copied. Select Yes to
continue installation of a workstation, and install only the minimum
files required. A minimal installation requires approximately 368K for
Ethernet or 390K for ARCNET. Only six or seven files (depending on the
board type selected) are copied: REDIR.EXE, NET.EXE, PLADMIN.EXE,
PLR.EXE, NETSHOW.EXE, and the NetBIOS corresponding to the board type.
If you select No, the installation will return you to the POWERLan
Installation Parameters dialog box to change the destination field.
If you are installing to a 360K diskette, the PLADMIN.EXE file will not
be included in the installation. To make changes to the configuration,
you will need access to PLADMIN, typically off a redirected network
drive. You may want to put the path of the redirected copy of PLADMIN
into the PATH statement. (See the topic "Making 360K Boot Diskettes"
for more detailed information on this process.)
In addition, if you later want this machine to serve as a print
unspooler, you will have to manually copy the PRTUNSPL.EXE file from
the release diskette to this diskette. This file is required for
unspoolers.
~T Cancel Button ~CANCEL
This selection cancels the installation and returns you to the MS-DOS
command line. You may also press ALT-C to cancel the installation.
~T2Confirm Cancel ~CONFIRMCANCEL
Enter Yes if you want to cancel the installation and return to the
MS-DOS command line. Enter No if you want to continue with your
installation.
~TCDo you want to upgrade? ~UPGRADE
If you already have POWERLan installed on this machine or if you run
the installation program with the /u option, you may elect to upgrade
upgrade rather than install. Upgrading leaves all system files and
configuration information intact. Entering Y (yes) displays a prompt
for the subdirectory into which the POWERLan files should be copied.
Once the files are copied, the installation program will ask whether
or not you want to update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
~TCInstallation Messages
The following describes messages that may displayed during installation
and possible solutions to error conditions.
~T Destination directory cannot be the same as the source ~ERRSAME
You must specify a destination directory in the "To:" field that
is different than the source (the "From" field).
~T You must specify a drive and directory for the source ~ERRDDS
Check your entry and make sure that you have specified both a drive
and a directory; also, ensure that the syntax is correct.
~T You must specify a drive and directory for the destination ~ERRDDD
Check your entry and make sure that you have specified both a drive
and a directory; also, ensure that the syntax is correct.
~T Error creating destination directory ~ERRCD
The destination directory you specified could not be created. The
destination may have read only access or be write protected.
~T Error creating temporary file in destination directory ~ERRCT
A temporary file could not be created in the destination directory
you specified. The destination may have read-only access or be
write-protected.
~T No files need to be installed or updated ~ERRNF
The files have already been installed or updated.
~T Not enough disk space: <n> bytes needed, only <n> free ~ERRNES
Take whatever action necessary to free more disk space and try the
installation again.
~T Not enough memory to allocate copy buffer ~ERRACB
Take whatever action necessary to free more memory and try the
installation again.
~T Error reading installation file ~ERRRI
The installation diskette may be faulty. Contact Performance
Technology or your dealer for a replacement.
~T Error obtaining drive information ~ERRDI
Hardware problem with drive.
~T Done copying files.
The program has finished copying the POWERLan files and is ready
to begin the next phase of the installation. If this is an
installation, you will be placed in the PLADMIN program to
complete the machine's configuration. If this is an upgrade,
the next step is to alter the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (if so desired).
~TCMaking Low Density Installation Diskettes
1. Install POWERLan as a server to a hard disk.
2. Assuming you installed to C:\PL, type the following:
MKDIR C:\PL\MAKEDISK
3. Insert the "Install 1" diskette in drive A: and type the following:
COPY A:\MAKEDISK\*.* C:\PL\MAKEDISK
4. Have a set of formatted diskettes ready ( currently it
requires five 360K or three 720K diskettes ).
5. Type:
CD \PL\MAKEDISK
To make 360K diskettes type the following:
C:\PL\MAKEDISK\MAKEDISK 360
or to make 720K diskettes type the following:
C:\PL\MAKEDISK\MAKEDISK 720
6. Fill in the "Install to:" field with either A:\ or B:\ and
press return on <Install>.
7. Insert and label the diskettes as prompted.
~T Making 360K Boot Diskettes
When installing POWERLan onto a 360K diskette, you will be asked "Do you
want a minimal installation. If you answer Yes, the minimum set of
files will be copied onto the diskette.
Make sure that the diskette has been formatted with the MS-DOS system
option, which is needed to create a bootable diskette.
NOTE: 360K minimal installation boot diskettes will not have the
PLADMIN program on the diskette. To make changes to the configuration,
you will need access to PLADMIN, typically off a redirected network
drive. Be sure to put the path of the redirected copy of PLADMIN into
the PATH statement.
